Juneteenth Festivities Abound in Fort Bend County
June 6th, 2008 categories: Houston Events, Off Beat, Sugar Land
![]()
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston County with the news that the war had ended and American slaves had been freed … two and a half years earlier.
Today, Texas citizens celebrate the historic ramifications of Abe Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation with statewide festivities honoring this “Juneteenth” anniversary. Missouri City’s is the largest.
Located southwest of Houston near Sugar Land, this year’s week-long Juneteenth event lineups include live music, cook-offs, dance contests, and historical re-enactments running from Sunday, June 8 to Saturday, June 14, 2008. Celebrations will culminate in a nationally-renowned, long-awaited parade and Gospel Explosion. Full schedule is available courtesy of the following link:

So if you’re searching for fun, family-oriented happenings this week, look no further than Missouri City’s roster of Juneteenth festivities . The celebration is but one of Fort Bend County’s year-long tributes to our community history and diversity.
